JLWOS IN ACTION

JUNIOR LEAGUE OF WESTCHESTER OF THE SOUND AND THE GOLDEN SHOESTRING SUPPORT MAMARONECK GIRLS AND FAMILIES

The Junior League of Westchester on the Sound (the “JLWOS”) and the Golden Shoestring partnered with the Social Work Department of the Mamaroneck Union Free School District (the “District”) to donate graduation dresses for girls and their families in need.

April Suehay Gonzalez (pictured), an employee of the Social Work Department of the District, collected 89 donated dresses from the Golden Shoestring, a “nearly new” shop operated by the JLWOS in Larchmont. The District’s Social Work Department will distribute the dresses to identified girls for upcoming graduations at the District’s middle and high school.

The partnership with the JLWOS, Golden Shoestring, and the District is the latest example of the JLWOS’ ongoing commitment to the Sound Shore Community. Since the beginning of the pandemic, the operations of the Golden Shoestring and trained volunteers of the JLWOS have provided meals for healthcare workers at New Rochelle Hospital, art supply donations to the Community Resource Center in Mamaroneck and the Carver Center in Port Chester, laptop computer donations to students in need to assist with remote learning, and home goods donations for the Furniture Sharehouse.

The JLWOS is an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women, and improving communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Its purpose is exclusively educational and charitable. The Golden Shoestring is the primary fundraising vehicle of the JLWOS. Proceeds from the Golden Shoestring support community projects and help fund scholarships and community grants to organizations and individuals in New Rochelle, Larchmont, Mamaroneck, Rye Brook, Harrison, Port Chester and Rye.
